The Swallows (2007)

Poem
Written in 73 short verses, this work chronicles the obsessive thoughts of a broken loveras he drinks through rant, reason, mumble, and song.

Video Installation
The initial verses are divided into four voices and projected as text above the heads of café goers. As customers work at computers or drink beer, the poem’s musings seem to become their own.
An adjacent projection mirrors the first and faces an actual mirror. The customers who sit here can then read the text as they drink. In this way they are pedestrian, actor and viewer simultaneously.

Performance/Concert/Drinking-Game
As customers left the bar, performers quietly replaced them. Once they had taken over all of the seats, they raised their glasses for a toast. The performers sang songs they had written based on the original Swallows text. Choreographed pedestrian movements and vocal clichés initiated and punctuated their songs. The word “Swallow” was repeated throughout the performance. Each time, performers raised their glasses, inviting audience members to join the songs, dances, cheers and roles.
